Search for a Domain Name
|
 |
One of the most challenging decisions encountered by those contemplating a
website is what to name it. Depending on whether you are focusing on a specific
business, form of advertising and/or marketing methods can determine what type
of domain name to use for your new website.

It is best to think of a domain name that will meet the following:
- Easy to Remember.
You would of course want your potential customers and existing clients to
remember your website address. Make sure to use something short and to the
point. A lot of businesses will simply use their name, like
linkuwebdesign.com or they might use a description, such as
plasticfences.com. Both of these names are easy to remember, but depending
on your marketing goals and methods, one may work better for you than the
other.
- Easy to Spell.
Another important factor in choosing a domain name is that your domain
should be easy to spell, because if the users type in the wrong web address
they may get the wrong site or no site at all. If the name of your business
is John's Lawn Service, then most users will type in your name without
error, such as johnslawnservice.com. However, if your name is subject to
memory or spelling errors, such as Vlasinkara, consider a short, simplified
version or a possibly a different approach altogether, as users are more
likely to make a mistake typing vlasinkaraslawnservice.com. You can also
consider registering misspellings of the domain as well.
- Short Enough to fit on your Advertising.
Some of the most important ways that people will find your site is with your
own sales and marketing materials, such as your business cards or brochures.
If your domain name is too long, then you may have a hard time fitting it on
your materials, without making it too small to read.
Choosing a Domain Name for the Search Engines
Often times, the importance of a domain name for search engine optimization is
often highly over-rated. Fact is most search engines do not highly consider the
domain name when they rank a site. The search engines will more likely take many
other factors into account before the domain name, but depending on your goals,
a search engine optimized domain may be your best option, however is most cases
it is not practical for branding or marketing offline.
Some other things to consider when choosing a name...
Be cautious about using numbers or hyphens in your domain name. Not everyone
will remember if it’s "two" or "2", or if you use a hyphen, such as
www.johns-lawn-service.com, this can create difficulties when you tell people
your web address. Most times people will end up at www.johnslawncare.com and
you'll find yourself always emphasizing that "dash" or "hyphen" when telling
people your website address.
